Since its founding in 2023, Great River Voices has brought together a diverse group of singers who share a love of music and a commitment to creating a welcoming, encouraging space where individuals feel empowered to take risks, learn, and grow together. Rooted in inclusion and community, GRV actively works to uplift voices that have been historically underrepresented, both on and off the stage. Through performance and outreach, the chorus continues to engage and enrich the Kentuckiana community while living out its mission to empower, engage, and inspire.
This show will feature a special guest performance by 2025 Barbershop Harmony Society International Finalists, Smoke Ring, a queer, mixed-voice barbershop and contemporary a cappella quartet based in New York, NY. The program promises a diverse range of vocal talent and repertoire that will resonate with every audience member while showcasing GRV’s continued pursuit of musical and emotional excellence.
GRV Chorus Director, Drew Wheaton, shares, “The love I witness between the singers of GRV at every rehearsal is more than performative; it is foundational to who we are. This concert is an embodiment of that spirit, woven through every note we sing.”

About our Featured Quartet

Their humble beginnings began behind a curtain in a ballroom in Charlotte, NC, where they tucked away for privacy to ring some chords in a crowded room. They made things official in Jan 2023, in preparation for Voices of Gotham’s Tin Pan Alley novice quartet contest, which they went on to win in their first year as an active quartet. The group later earned the title of Mid-Atlantic Northern Division quartet champs later that same year, and became the first-ever mixed voice quartet to win the Mid-Atlantic District quartet competition (2024 champs).
More recently, Smoke Ring earned the title of Harmony Sweepstakes National Champions, and placed 10th in the world at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2025 International quartet contest. They’ve wowed audiences at venues such as the US Open and NYC’s Terminal 5, where they opened for international touring act Sammy Rae and the Friends. No matter the venue or the size of the audience, Smoke Ring always aims to inspire singers and othered voices in the community by pushing the limits of what’s possible in barbershop with a lot of sass and sparkle.
